eARC doesnt work with Samsung TV

Samsung regret 1/7/2022

i bought this soundbar several years ago so i could have the center channel for dialog. it didn't work and i attributed that to my old toshiba tv. i recently bought a samsung au8000 tv hoping to finally get real surround support, center channel support, and audio control from the tv. unfortunately, the soundbar just doesn't work with arc or earc. the tv reverts back to tv speakers and says that an arc device is not connected. so, now i am stuck with an optical connection and disappointing audio performance lacking center channel clarity :(. upgrading the sw in the soundbar didn't resolve the problem.

I need help

damonhays99 9/30/2019

I bought this soundbar a couple of days ago is connected to my Xbox One via Optical Audio cable. For some reason no matter if I turn the volume down or up after about a minute or two it keeps defaulting the volume back to 54. It's really annoying and loud. Could anyone help please?

So Good I Bought Another One

Mikee1201 5/22/2019

I already owned this soundbar with the rear speakers. Just purchased another TV and was looking to upgrade the sound with a soundbar. My first choice was this unit based on how great the first one was. I thought about holding off and waiting for the Atmos units to drop in price. Only the newest content is Atmos capable so why pay extra for that feature. There are a couple of things that make this soundbar stand out versus many of its competitors. First is that it has 2 speakers per channel instead of a single speaker which give better clarity. The second is that it has the center channel which delivers great dialouge allowiing the the outer speakers to deliver a better stereo experience. The soundbar is well made. The subwoofer may not shake the lamps but does give sufficient rumble as needed. The overall volume is very good for watching movies.

Experience may vary

ShowbizScroll 3/11/2019

Bought this a year ago and I've used it almost every other day. I can say that on my Vizio TV, this soundbar is horrible. No bass at Max sub and bass volume, set to supported formats, everything. Even tried using DTS on it and made no difference. Surround would come out at random, it was just a bad experience. I couldn't return it because of billing issues because of Best buy. As of now, I decided to give my parents the soundbar on their Samsung 8000 series TV. It works a whole lot better and actually sounds great. That's where the problem is. It's one of those products that "function better" in the Samsung ecosystem. It's scummy to have a product perform considerably worse on a competitors product than your own. Also, plastic subwoofer enclosure? Really? For 400$?

Great and if paired with rear speakers - Perfect!

Coachcat 2/22/2019

I decided to give this soundbar a try despite the bad reviews and because I owned a Samsung tv and also lots of this brand's stuff. I think the bad vibe comes because the soundbar manual can be a bit vague when it comes to setting it up. I must say up front that if you pair this soundbar with the SWA-8500S rear speakers you will have a great surround sound system without the hustle of moving wires around. Yes, the rear speakers are not entirely "wireless" , they are wired to a true wireless receiver where they also get their power from! A lot of people are not happy with that but think if you will have them truly wireless, than you need to charge them since they will need to have a battery to work, right? And if you forget to do it, well you may run out of juice right in the middle of your movie! Now, back to setting the bar: the initial part with the powering off the subwoofer and soundbar connections is easy and straight forward. Adjusting it to get the most of it is the tricky part: I used a HDMI cable to the ARC connection because the tv remote control will work best this way, while with the optical cable will power on but not off somehow!? The best sound for my ears will come out if you setup your TV SOUND on PCM than DTS 2.5, although is a very little difference from the Dolby Sound. Next I worked up my levels of subwoofer to +6 and treble to +5, set the sound mode to STANDARD and went to YouTube to give it a try: "music to my ears"! If you expect the live tv to sound awesome than you can wait for a long time. The greatness of this soundbar will shine on your movies, Netflix, Prime etc or music either streamed or through your bluetooth! But the BEST SETUP is if you add the rear speakers for surround and believe me for just under $350 all together you got yourself a GREAT HOME SOUND SYSTEM!! Since I been writing this long review (my first, that's why :)), I will add here also the QUICK SETUP for the SAMSUNG REAR SPEAKERS SWA-8500S: 1. Power OFF TV 2. Power OFF SOUNDBAR 3. Power ON REAR SPEAKERS with flashing blue light 4. On Soundbar remote control press MUTE ( right in the middle of volume +,- button) for more than 5 seconds until the Soundbar shows the ID SET message. Now take your finger off Mute and Power On the Soundbar and that should be it. 5. Now go to Settings button on Soundbar remote and press until you get to "Rear Speakers" and now press the UP on the Middle Circle to get the level up to +4 or +5, up to +6. Next press Surround on your remote to ON and that should be it! Good luck and hope you will enjoy your sound system as much we have!!

Decent soundbar/poor subs

I had these for almost a year and my subs started shutting off during use repeatly for no reason. This soundbar sounds great with working subs, but with no subs it sounds to empty as if something is missing.

Exceeded my expectations

FixItt 1/13/2019

The sound is incredible. I am not an audiophile, and have tinnitus, am partially deaf (my wife calls it selective listening) so I can't hear a pin drop much less people whispering. I am very impressed by the bass this little sub puts out. Too bad the Samsung 7 series TV I just bought has less than desirable audio output, they almost require you to buy a soundbar to get the sound you expected in the beginning (plus some booming bass). We bought this at a club store -there were 5 in stock. We went back 2 days later and they were all gone. I lost one of the round plastic mounts (they should make them square so, if dropped, they don't drop into the realm of the never to be found dimension). These are $8.00 from Samsung. I ordered two because I am prepared if my gorilla hands fumble again.

Horrible connectivity

SamsungIsOverated 1/12/2019

Bought this soundbar at best buy with a new Samsung tv. Was told they seemlessy connect. Didnt. Also bought the rear speakers that consistently disconnect every few minutes and go silent. Return policy was up by the time best buy figured out what speakers were the proper ones were (took 3 trips). Buyer beware. Multiple calls to Samsung tech support has not helped.

Great soundbar. Sub lacks bass.

Akira Kelly 8/23/2018

Well like others have said in other reviews it does lack bass. I went from a high end Onkyo to this unit trying to save space and having wires running everywhere. That being said after playing with several settings I finally got it to where I am happy and don't have the feeling like I need to return it. I will share what I figured out. I also have the rear wireless speakers connected. Like many I had changed my settings to sub +6 Treble -6 Bass +6 First I reread the specs. I noticed that if you have your audio set to PCM the unit thinks it is receiving DTS. In the specs it says for DTS it will only give you 2.0 stereo. For 5.1 it says to use Dolby Digital. Change TV audio output I changed the output of my TV to Dolby Digital and noticed an increase in volume about 1/4 more and noticed bass response also increased. Again referring to specs PCM was only 2.0 NOT 2.1 so sub was only receiving stero input. I then played Jurassic Park and hugh difference in the surround sound especially the rear speakers and there was a noticeable thump in the bass with the T-rex . Now knowing that I had it set to PCM before the back speaker were just stereo copying the front left and right with Dolby Digital the back speakers now are really working in surround mode. Re-position Sub Another thing I noticed is the sub is very directional. Which I would not believe at first thinking bass shakes and is a low should hear it no matter where the sub is placed. I had mine to the side and behind my cough. When I walk over to where it was there was a noticeable difference standing in front of the sub. So I moved it next to the tv and pointed it towards the couch. Again noticeable difference. To the point now I was able to reset the speaker settings to sub +6 Treble 0 Bass 0 and retest the speakers with several movies. I was happy with the results. Again the bass was not body shaking bass but there was the deep thump in the movies where it is suppose to be. One final note when watching DVD or blu rays double check the movie audio settings to make sure that DTS is not selected and Dolby Surround is.

Great sound paired with rear speakers but broke after 4 months

SafetyManager 5/31/2018

Loved this soundbar when I first got it and hooked it up to the subwoofer and rear wireless speakers but then one afternoon it just stopped working. I only had the soundbar for 4 months. I was able to ship it to their support center to get it repaired but really surprised that it would just quit working. Thankfully it was still under warranty.

Love this thing!

chrismarku777 5/26/2018

This soundbar is the perfect thing I needed for a projector setup! It works great, sounds amazing, and, my favorite words, 'The Price is Right.' Now I did notice something with this item and I'm unsure if its me or if all soundbars do this, but there is a 1/2 to 1 second delay between the sound coming from the soundbar and the TV (for example, with no soundbar connected to a TV/Projector, the sound is on point with the picture, where as if the soundbar is connected to the TV/Projector, then there is a slight delay between the sound and the picture). Is this normal for most soundbars to do this type of thing?

It's a solid performer with both pros and cons

CarltonSaves 4/22/2018

To be quick, this sound bar is solid for the price. Of course if you get the Atmos one, you'll get much better sound and bass, but again, if you go cheaper, you'll hear the difference. This is a middle of the road, high value unit. The sound and volume are great, and bass can be adjusted. It's not your local XD earth shaking bass, but contrary to some here, the bass is decent. The look is sleek, and the connection via BT was easy and has maintained. Using it with a 65" Q7 and 4K Blue Ray player. Performance is everything I want it to be. I would definitely recommend this unit, especially if you want a great soundbar without going over $500.

Stopped working after 3 days.

NeedTheSound 3/26/2018

This is the second Samsung sound bar we've had. Hooked up this one about a week ago via HDMI through the TV (ARC). Sound was amazing. Then, while we were watching a movie, all the sound and sound from the subwoofer just blew out. Nothing for the sound bar, or the woofer. Sound switched right over to the TV again. I looked online for a resolution, tried the various things suggested, and nothing helped. Called Samsung...they said it needed service. ??? After less than a week? Ugh. I'm just going to return it to the store.

Soundbar

JH255 1/29/2018

I purchased the sound bar and sub woofer for my 55" Samsung tv. The sound on the tv was already good quality but when I added the sound bar and sub it was terrific. The sub doesn't help much unless you are watching an action packed movie. I would definitely recommend this as a good add on for home theater. I plan on adding the rear speakers as well to help even more.

Average sound-bar

Galaxy26 1/22/2018

Guys, sound-bar is average to improve sound in your living room or game room. The SM-M550 soundbar perform excellent but those peoples who is looking for increase Bass then I do not recommend buying this sound-bar. This soundbar is fully comes with standards ports of what everyone is looking for. The soundbar is lightweight, compact design, easy setup and inexpensive. The only thing is lacks of bass. The soundbar works very well with rear speakers upgrade to 5.1 channels. sometimes connections between receiver to soundbar is little glitch. I purchase this high watts soundbar to increase sound stage and add increase bass but sad to say the soundbar did bring increase the sound stage that I was looking for but subwoofer was not powerful enough. - I have did a replace the soundbar with an same one but lack of bass was same.

Great 5.1 Sound When Paired With Rear Speakers

Mikee1200 12/26/2017

Purchased the HW-M550/ZA and the rear speakers. Initially connected the soundbar/subwoofer via the digital audio input. The audio was better than the built in speakers of the Samsung TV but I was just surfing channels on the TV. I then decided to see how they would do on a movie done in 5.1. Opened Amazon and watched Hacksaw Ridge; at this point I did not connect the rear speakers). There was a real difference is the sound. About 1/2 way thru is when the real action is happening. Navy ships bombing, guns firing, etc... The difference was huge. The subwoofer was loud; had to back it down some. Next day connected the rear speakers. This was a present for my mom. My sister came over and mom wanted to show her how great this soundbar was. Used the same movie and fast forwarded to an action scene. You could here the bullets fly by. A very good 5.1 system and the price I paid was way less than MSRP.

Samir1 12/24/2017

Met expectations in every way. I read reviews about subwoofer not kickin enough but mine is pretty lound. It makes my room and other parts of my home shake when its turned all the way up. There is a setting to turn up the bass in the subwoofer. I leave mine on 4 and it goes up to 6. I got the rear speakers to go with it and my surround sound system is awesome.

Not 340W as advertised! Treble,Bass,Sub controls below par, no remote control ap

SirLanceALot2 12/6/2017

First of all this system is "WAY underpowered", especially the subwoofer just as the other reviewers have pointed out. ***There's absolutely no way this sub is 160w as advertised!!*** And where do you get the 340W spec for the entire system? No way. I'm a test engineer, I should know! I was able to insert a graphic equalizer between the TV and sound bar to boast the overall level and especially to boast up the subwoofer, and WHALLA!!! The system's speakers "CAN actually" output a much much higher level. But they can't do this by themselves. Samsung seriously needs to boost the input levels internally in the soundbar, and especially to the sub! Since I was able to boast the input level and really crank the system up without distortion, the power amps in it can handle it, but the preamp gains are set way too low. The soundbar, left, center, & right speakers do sound excellent. I like it has tweeters and speakers for both right and left. I just wish I had more control over the levels, especially the center speaker for boasting speech. What's seriously lacking in this system is better control over the Treble, Bass, and Sub volume levels. Adjustments thru the full range are barely noticeable. It's disappointing there's no app you can load on your iphone or android to control the soundbar, like the competing Visio soundbars have. You have to live with the minimal remote supplied. My Screen is a Samsung, so that's why I decided to buy a Samsung soundbar. I've connected the soundbar to the TV via the digital optical audio connection. Everything hooked up and the sub sync'd without any problems. But as I mentioned above, I later had to insert an equalizer to boast the level and sublevel. My overall opinion is I would not recommend this soundbar as is, because you really can't fill the room with this system..... that is unless you do what I did and boast the level between the screen and soundbar with an EQ or something similar.

iPETaDogOnce 11/27/2017

I was going to get the 2.1 channel samsung system to pair to my new 55" samsung tv. The best buy associate said this 3.1 channel setup was better sound quality due to the center speaker (makes vocals louder) but it seems to be over powered. I had to turn my treble down so I could turn the volume up to get a better hit from the sub. I honestly should have saved the $ and went with the 2..1 channel (older) model. Here's my settings Treble -2 Bass +6 Subwoofer +6

Most of the reviews are correct on the sub woofer output.: it is low. But, I have mine next to the couch, and it does provide "depth of field" and improves the overall experience. I added the wireless rear speakers, and while (also plagued by low volume) substantially enhances the overall performance. The best feature is the center channel: dialog is superb

The soundbar and wireless Bluetooth subwoofer paired effortlessly with my new 75" UHD Samsung TV. Unfortunately, it lacks sufficient bass from the subwoofer, even when turned up to max. The only time the bass is evident is at volume levels of 70+.

Weak base

J0se 8/22/2017

I got this at Best Buy with the wireless rear speaker. However after trying it out for 2 weeks I just had to return it. Had it connected to my Samsung 49in UHD and wanted it for gaming on Xbox one with the 5.1 Chanel setup. However the Base was just to weak. Had the sub woofer maxed out at +6 and also the Base under setting at +6 but when playing games still could not get the bang. I was planing on replacing my LG 4.1 that's about 2 years old with this one for 5.1 but the Samsung just did not compete. I do really hope Samsung next model will correct this.

Very disappointed in this sound bar. My 5 year old LG was far superior. This is a BAD buy!!!

Sub Lacks Punch

CHWR 5/27/2017

I just bought this to upgrade from the 2.1 HW-JM45C/ZA. The sub on that one stopped putting any punch on movies at all. There was a little sound, but not much. This one did not impress me much either. The soundbar is great as it has a center channel to it. But the sub lacks punch to it as well.

Weak subwoofer

Pantect 5/19/2017

Great sound through the actual sound bar, center channel a little to dominant, lacking that bass punch. otherwise good sound. The Subwoofer is the big drawback on this product. its volume is weak and doesn't give you that sound you expect to receive from a subwoofer.
